Every January we get suckered off to see CES and more of the same gadgets we saw last year. Only on the way home does it occur to use that we could have gone to the Detroit Auto show and checked out next year’s rides, which are much more likely to make it to market than some of the eGadgets we’d just seen in Vegas.
The good news is that virtual coverage of shows is getting better and better, and the North American International Auto Show folks have done an especially good job capturing the show floor in a map you can click on to see what each manufacturer had going on.
The news from Detroit seems to be that cars are going to be more boring than usual, and those big black front scoops that have been showing up on Fords, Audis, and Mazdas are infecting the rest of the world. Dudes, you may thing they’re cool now, but trust us, people thought shag haircuts were cool once and now have to live with them in yearbook photos.
Two things we missed on the show floor: sexy models (there actually is one, and three points if you can find her) and concept cars, which are where the real fun is. Fortunately, they sponsored a photo contest, brilliant piece of crowd-sourcing, and you can feast your eyes on the entries in the “Cool Coupes and Concept Cars” Category. You’ll have to rely on Google for your model fix.
Meanwhile, we’ll look forward to the New York Auto Show this April. If we can find a parking space.
